Accusato ingiustamente di essere uno dei responsabili di una rapina in banca, il mite Henry (Keanu Reeves) trascorre un anno in carcere, dove conosce Max (James Caan), un truffatore incallito. Una volta liberi, i due uomini progettano di organizzare veramente un assalto alla stessa banca per cui Henry era stato arrestato, congegnando un elaborato piano che prevede l'utilizzo di un vecchio sottopassaggio che collega la banca a un teatro. Per studiare meglio il percorso dall'interno del teatro, Henry e Max si fanno assumere dalla produzione dello spettacolo in cartellone. Sarà però subito amore tra Henry e Julie (Vera Farmiga), la prima attrice della compagnia.

Keanu Reeves seems mildly sedated during most of Henry's Crime. I think that's intentional. He plays the feckless Henry Torne, an overnight toll booth attendant in Buffalo, who agrees to play in a softball game, drives a car filled with other players and discovers that what they're actually planning is a bank robbery. Henry gets caught and thrown in the slammer and takes it philosophically.
