Ed Harley lebt nach dem Tod seiner Frau mit seinem Sohn allein. Sie führen ein einfaches, aber zufriedenes Leben. Bis zu dem Tag, als eine Gruppe Jugendlicher in das ländliche Gebiet kommen, um dort Motocross zu fahren. Als Ed gerade nicht da ist, wird sein Sohn von einem der Jugendlichen angefahren und stirbt an den Verletzungen. In seiner Trauer ersucht Ed eine alte Hexe um Hilfe, doch diese kann seinem Sohn nicht mehr helfen. Jedoch bietet sie ihm die Dienste eines uralten Rachedämonen an, der in seinem Grab ruht. Blind vor Wut willigt Ed ein und die Hexe erweckt den "Pumpkinhead" zu neuem Leben. Der Dämon erwacht und macht sich sofort auf die Jagt nach den Sterblichen, für die er gerufen wurde. Einer nach dem Anderen stirbt nun einen fürchterlichen Tod. Der Dämon genießt es, seine Opfer langsam sterben zu lassen. Doch die Sache hat auch seinen Preis. Als Ed seine Tat bewusst wird, kann auch er den Pumpkinhead nicht mehr aufhalten...
